Laundry Day

IMGP1558We’re starting to space the harder workouts apart now as we get closer and closer to Ironman race day.  Normally we lay low on rest days, put in a good swim, sleep and eat a ton.  Today, however, we had to make the trip over to Lompoc in order to upgrade our YMCA passes for use in Solvang/Santa Ynez.  Along the way, we picked up the goods for an oil change and did our last big load of laundry before driving up to Idaho.  We don’t leave for a week and a half, but, we’ve only done laundry 4 times in the last 3 months so I’m sure it will be our last laundromat visit n California.

Post Wildflower, we started back into our IM Coeur D’Alene build pretty quickly with some of the biggest training either of us have done.  Not necessarily anything massive or insane on one particular day, just consistent, long days topping out at 35 hours for a 7 day period.   We’re getting used to training more than we have in the past, but still finding the limits that tell us to stop.  For the first time in my 5 years of triathlon I’ve caught a cold in weather that feels like the middle of summer.  Right at the tail end of a 10 day training cycle.  My biggest ever and quite obviously a limit.  It started with a sore throat, then went to my chest the evening of a day off.  By the next day I coughed most of it up and out, and by the third and 4th day, both training days again, all I had was a raspy voice – akin to Tom Waits, or an oldschool Clint Eastwood.  I even did a Tom Waits impersonation that left Heather slack jawed in awe.  Back at it now without even a hitch in training.  Phew.

IMGP1505We’re really looking forward to IM Coeur D’Alene.  We’ve thrown some extra volume and longer sets into our swim training, we’re riding better than ever at Ironman pace, and the long runs fly by without a worry.  Another couple weeks of fine tuning and we’ll be looking at setting a few more personal bests in our first Ironman of 2009.  Heather, last year’s Ironman Coeur D’Alene winner, and therefore defending champion, will be signing her first personal POSTER!!  Blue Competition Cycles will be holding a bike demo out at a local bike shop called Cyclemetrix (located on the bike course) on Thursday of race week.  She’ll be there with what I’m sure will be a very cool poster and a plethora of bikes for you to try.  Come on down, check out the bikes, take ’em for a spin, and pet the cat!

Our departure date for Idaho will be June 1st.  It’s been a slice training on the incredible roads of the Santa Ynez valley.  We’ll definitely be back next December or January, but for now we’re looking forward to a change.  I don’t think we could ever settle in one place; we’re thankfully condemned to RV living for the rest of time.  The roads around here are seriously epic.  If you saw a picture of them in a magazine you would wish you could ride or run them.  Even knowing what we’re leaving behind we’re REALLY looking forward to getting up to lake country.  On the way up we’re diving in to as many as possible before hitting the ultimate in lake swimming heaven – Okanagan Lake and Kalamalka lake – and our personal favorite swimmable river just North of Penticton – the Silmilkameen river at Bromely Rock…a must stop location if you’re driving up to the Okanagan on the Hope-Princeton highway.  It’s only swimmable in August and September…if you plan on swimming upstream, that is.  Feel free to jump in now and test your luck against the melt water if you wish.  Disclaimer: don’t sue me if you die.

  1. I hereby request one such poster. Signed, of course. And if the guys in Rammstein could also sign it, that would be great. Thank you.
